Creative Projects: Hands-on Lunch Series (Daily)

  • Mount Royal University: Main Street 4825 Mount Royal Gate Southwest Calgary, AB, T3E 6K6 Canada (map)

From Darkness, Light:
(Daily: Monday-Thursday)

Using techniques borrowed from street art and mural painting, artist Jesse Gouchey (Treaty 6) will guide participants through the innovative process of oxidized t-shirt design. Starting with a basic black t-shirt, learn the basics of light, contrast, and shading before giving life to your own personal work of art. Our goal is to create 94 personal murals that illuminate the Truth and Reconciliation Council Calls to Action. Stencils will also be available for those who prefer not to use a freehand technique.

General Admission: $35     |     Youth: $10

Ribbon Projects: Fire Skirts, Fire Shirts, and HBC Trade Patterns
(Daily: Monday-Thursday)

On Main Street, join Sewing Seeds Canada and Otahpiaaki designers for an opportunity to craft a ribbon skirt or shirt that will be featured at our Community Showcase on Saturday, September 23rd at 2pm at the City Hall Atrium. Suitable for Powwow and other celebrations, novices are invited to select a project inspired by the Hudson's Bay point blankets (4 colours) or, for the more advanced sewer,  a fire skirt or shirt (5 colours).

Women’s ribbon skirts are considered to be the most sacred item a woman can wear because it is her way of connecting to Mother Earth. Ribbon shirts for men are sewn together with love, when men put on their ribbon shirts, they wear them with pride. Both men ribbon shirts and women ribbon skirts are unique in design and vary from Nation to Nation from across Turtle Island.

General Admission: $35      |     Youth: $10
