Celebrate the kickoff to Otahpiaaki 2017: Indigenous Beauty, Fashion & Design Week with Grammy nominated Northern Cree Singers. With a catalogue of 37 albums recorded over the past 25 years, award-winning Northern Cree Singers, received their seventh Grammy nomination this year, for their most recent recording It’s A Cree Thing - Cree Round Dance Songs. Northern Cree performed the song “Cree Cuttin’” live on the pre-telecast portion of the show that was streamed worldwide. This marked the first time Native American/First Nations traditional music was performed on the Grammy stage. In May of 2017, Northern Cree was honored in Winnipeg as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indigenous Music Awards.
Hosted by Canadian country musician Paul Brandt (MRU Storyteller-in-Residence), the week begins with blessings from Elders, an opportunity to meet artists, designers, and performers from 15 First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, and an evening performance with the Northern Cree Singers at the Bella Concert Hall.
